George Thomas "Tom" Lazenby

George Thomas (Tom) Lazenby, of Lone Wolf, Oklahoma, was born on February 12th, 1955, and passed away on December 22nd, 2023, at age 68. He departed in Tipton, Oklahoma. Tom was surrounded by love and dogs at the time of his passing. Tom was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, to George Edward Lazenby and Mary Edith Wallace Lazenby. He grew up in a vibrant military family with four siblings, living in Mississippi, Japan, Illinois, and Missouri, before settling in Oklahoma. As a young person, Tom attended Lone Wolf High School, where he played football and graduated class of 1973. He then attended Oklahoma State University, where he became acquainted with lifelong friends, and was an active member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Tom spent many years with his former wife, Cheri Bentley, with whom he raised three children, Mary Shelby Carter, Thomas Henrey Lazenby, and Garrett Blake. Tom was a man with a keen mind, a resourceful nature, and great love for animals, fun, and good music. He had many occupations throughout life, from owning businesses to working for Great Plains Well Logging. With his brother Van, he built rock and brick buildings and homes as Lazco. Throughout life, he often chose to build, restore, and repair homes and workplaces: important work that improved the lives of others. Some of Tom’s favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing, and playing golf. Tom loved taking in and caring for animals of all kinds. He will especially be missed by Charlie, his talking grey parrot; they shared a special bond, just as Tom did with so many of his pets. Tom also loved to make music, he could hardly pass a guitar without picking it up, or a piano without improvising a song. Whether playing guitar at home with family, or entertaining a crowd in his countless public performances, singing and playing guitar in Southwest Oklahoma over the years, Tom knew that music was the secret to a good time, and a happy life. Tom was a warm and generous soul, if you needed a friend, or even if you needed a family, he’d put a roof over your head and find you a place at his table. So many people’s lives have been brightened and made better by Tom’s friendship and caring spirit. He will be greatly missed by all left behind, including his beloved dog, Missy, who went just about everywhere with him. Tom deeply loved his family, and was proud of his children. He loved to spend time with his grandson, Case, often taking him along to work through the years; they were two of a kind. Tom has left a legacy of wisdom, strength, and kindness in his children and grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Edith Lazenby; his grandparents, Marshall Van and Lola Mae Lazenby, and Roy and Idell Wallace; his Aunt Jane Wallace Smitherman, and cousin Sudie Smitherman, as well as his good friend and “husband-in-law” Tony Bentley. Tom is survived by his children, Shelby (Franklin) Carter, Thomas H. Lazenby, and Garrett Blake, as well as Michael (Jamie) Bentley, and Sean (Beth) Bentley, and former wife, Cheri Bentley. Tom is also survived by his grandchildren, Case Caward and Koda Lane Lazenby, and Hugh Bentley, Luna Bentley, and Forrest Bentley. He is also survived by his siblings, Van (Diane) Lazenby, William (Linda) Lazenby, Suzanne (Paul) Maryeski, and Edie Lazenby. Tom is also survived by Brandon Norris and NaYimmi Norris, Shayla Norris, Brandy Robertson, Victor Robertson, Britton Caward, Branson Caward, Bolton Caward, and many more loving relatives and friends. Tom is also survived by his great friend, Laretha Johnson-Vincent, who brought joy to his life in recent years. Services for Tom are scheduled for Thursday, December 28, 2023, 3:00 P.M., at the Lone Wolf School Auditorium, with interment following in Lone Wolf Cemetery. Public viewing will begin Wednesday, December 27, 2023, 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., with family present to receive friends between the hours of 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., at Peoples Funeral Home located at 1400 West Main, 580-846-9018.
