Thelma June Womack

Thelma June Womack passed away peacefully and into her eternal home with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 8th, 2025. Thelma June Davis was born on August 10th, 1938, in Elk City, Oklahoma to Mary Ellen Poole. Thelma spent much of her young life being raised by her grandparents, whom she loved very much. In the winter of 1959 Thelma met a handsome young man named Gary Womack, and soon after they fell in love and were married July 29th, 1961. They were married for 64 years. Immediately after, Gary joined the U.S. Air Force. His first station took them to Hawaii where Thelma worked cleaning apartments. Then they next moved to New Hampshire where Thelma cleaned houses. The next station took them to Maryland. While there, Thelma worked her way up to a management position in a restaurant on base. But when Gary started flying, she decided to stay home and worked in coding from home. Also, during this time Gary taught her how to drive. In 1969, while stationed in Maryland, a neighbor lady, who had an afternoon Vacation Bible School in her home shared the Gospel of Salvation with Thelma and on that wonderful day she accepted Christ as her Savior. Thelma then begins to go to church with her neighbor, then in time, Gary started attending with her. About six weeks later the pastor came to their home and led Gary to Christ. The next duty station took them to Charleston, South Carolina. During the time Thelma got heavily involved in growing African Violets. She grew a variety of them and even became a judge in the African Violet Club Competitions. Their last station took them to Altus Air Force Base, Altus, Oklahoma. In Altus, Thelma had several cleaning jobs at a hotel and also at Red River Credit Union and at Stockman’s Bank. They joined Tabernacle Baptist Church where Thelma taught Sunday School for years. She loved teaching children, and she had a generous heart for helping the youth go to church camp and also for those that went off to Bible College. Thelma was also very involved in monthly ladies’ meetings, always enjoying the time of fellowship and spiritual encouragement. She also loved the ladies’ retreats and went every year while she was able to. She loved her church and was always concerned about any need there might be. She had a big heart for missionaries too, during any missionary’s visit to Tabernacle she was always asking if there was a need that they had and wanted to give to help them. Thelma was a devoted wife and mother. The Lord gave Thelma and Gary a son, David and a daughter, Waynette. Thelma leaves behind her beloved family, her devoted husband Gary, her son David and his wife Adora of Norman, Oklahoma and her daughter, Waynette of Altus, Oklahoma. Her Grandchildren, Angelica and husband Nathan Beckler of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Abigail and husband Bryce Prickett of Norman, Oklahoma, and Shelby Womack of Altus, Oklahoma. Her Great Grandchildren, Ava and Ashton Beckler and Claire and Archer Prickett. Her brother Jim Chaney of Hobbs New Mexico and her brother LeRoy Chaney and wife Margie of Brady, Texas. Her Cousin, Joanne Dedman, and cousin by marriage, Sue Poole. Thelma loved her son and daughter very much and was always bragging on them. She also loved being a grandmother and was very proud of her grandchildren. She was very excited when she found out she would be a Great Grandmother. She loved showing pictures of them to visitors coming by the house. Gary was the love of her life, and she loved to tell the story of how they met and all the military adventures they had together. In the latter years they sat side by side in their recliners and enjoyed watching Westerns together. Always thankful for each day that God had given them together. Services for Thelma are scheduled for Thursday, March 13, 2025, 2:00 P.M., at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Altus, Oklahoma.
