Samuel Alphonso Davis
March 1, 1938 - October 16, 2016
On October 16, 2016, Samuel Alphonso Davis of Lone Wolf, OK (78) quietly left this life surrounded by his family and an empty box of tissues. He fought a very good fight since May of this year, but his body was tired. His daughters never left his side or let go of his hands. He passed knowing his entire family loved him the same way he loved them: fully, unabashedly, unconditionally, and with his whole heart. Sam was born on the first day of March in 1938 to Stafford and Vera Bryan Davis of Lone Wolf, OK. He was raised on a farm along with his four brothers and one sister. Though Sam’s grades didn’t always show it, he was very sharp. To his grandchildren’s constant disappointment, he didn’t miss much. After high school, Sam proudly joined the Navy in 1956 and served on the Ticonderoga. He spoke fondly of his memories traveling the world while in the Navy. He felt very fortunate, and constantly said he had seen and done things most people could only dream about. Sam married Jackie Ernestine Crumpton on March 30, 1962 in Granite, OK. In 1964 and 1969, Sam was blessed with two girls who were his whole world. Sam’s daughters will remember him for how hard he worked to support them. For many years, he lived and worked on the very same farm he grew up on, which he loved. However, his wife usually referred to this as just an expensive hobby. So, to make extra money he drove a semi from coast to coast. In his later years, Sam became a licensed plumber and started his own business until he retired in 1993. Though retired, Sam continued to work part time for many years after. In 1990, Sam’s first grandchild was born. Sam was hospitalized at the time of Shelby’s birth, but he told the hospital he had a granddaughter and needed to be released so he could go see her. He met Shelby that day. Sam’s two children and eleven living grandchildren were the center of his retired life. Sam is better known as Papa to these grandchildren. His grandchildren will forever feel the unconditional love of their Papa surrounding them. The entire family knows his love is his greatest legacy and will continue to live on long after he took his last breath. Samuel is preceded in death by his parents, Stafford and Vera Davis, his wife, Jackie Davis, brothers, Wayne and Don Davis, children Samantha Jean and Gayle Ray Davis, grandchildren Trevor and Christopher Horton, and one great grandchild Grayson Genheimer. Sam is survived by daughter Margrett Horton and husband Lee Horton of Lone Wolf, OK, daughter Samantha Plank and husband Rusty Plank of Oklahoma City, OK, brother Bill Davis and wife Faye Davis of Ruston, LA, sister, Patricia McAllister of Atlanta, GA, brother, Gayle Davis, of Oklahoma City, OK. Sam is also survived by grandchildren Courtney Horton, Trenton Horton, Mary Horton, Johnny Horton, Joey Horton, Shelby Biggs and husband, Brian Biggs, Callie Genheimer and husband Eric Genheimer, Taylor Adams, Gabriel Plank, Haleigh Plank, Chloe Plank, and husband Jared Shatwell. Sam also had a special place in his heart for Jennifer and Scott Burnett. To him, they were just as much his children as his own. The Memorial Service will be held at 10 AM Saturday, October 22nd, 2016 at People’s Cooperative Funeral Home in Lone Wolf, OK. Directly after the service, Sam will be laid to rest at Hobart Rose Cemetery. The United States Navy will be present to honor his service to our country. Visitation for family and friends will take place from 6 PM until 8 PM on Friday October 21, 2016 also at the People’s Cooperative Funeral Home.
